Permenter

Co-Owner, Pacific Autohaus · AI & Software Builder

I run a used car dealership — and I build the software that runs it.

A self-taught builder and hands-on operator. Independent dealer, systems obsessive. Every tool I make gets tested on my own lot first.

About

A car dealer who writes his own software.

James Permenter is the co-owner of Pacific Autohaus, an independent used-car dealership on California's Central Coast. He's been around cars since he was 17 — detailing, photography, marketing, sales, finance, management, and now ownership — and pairs that with a builder's obsession for automating almost everything.

He's not a tech guy who bought a dealership, and not a dealer who hired developers. He's an operator who codes, and ships. Everything he's built — from automated lead follow-up to an AI assistant that runs the shop — started as a problem on his own lot.

The story

Cars have been part of my life since I was a teenager. It started with detailing and ran through every part of the business.

Age 17

Alfano Mercedes-Benz

My first job in the industry — detailing luxury cars. It taught me craftsmanship, attention to detail, and what an exceptional customer experience actually looks like.

Independent

Triple 7 Auto Sales

My first look at the independent side — how cars get bought, reconditioned, marketed, and sold, and how a dealership really runs day to day.

Launch → sales → finance → management

Kia of Paso Robles

When Triple 7 acquired the Kia franchise, I helped open the store from the ground up. I set up and ran their website and CRM, the online advertising, and the photography — and learned those systems inside and out — then moved into sales, first as a sales consultant on internet leads, then as showroom and internet manager. I spent several years as a finance manager before stepping into management: inventory acquisition, customer relations, and leading a team.

Founder

Jungle Man LLC

Alongside cars, I founded an Amazon e-commerce company — product development, branding, sourcing, logistics, and digital marketing. All of it still shapes how I operate.

Perspective

Travel

Seeing how other countries and cultures do business changed how I think about customers and problems. The best ideas usually come from watching someone solve something differently.

2025 — now

Pacific Autohaus

All of it fed into this. The goal is bigger than a dealership: a modern automotive company built on transparency, technology, AI, and service — with every part of the buying experience getting better over time.

Pacific Autohaus

Independent used car dealership on California's Central Coast. Co-founded 2025.

I co-own Pacific Autohaus 50/50. We sell handpicked German and Japanese vehicles, do our own reconditioning with an in-house mechanic, and operate as a licensed California dealer with a state-registered repair facility. In 2026 we expanded into a second building.

Mission: buy and sell high-quality used vehicles while creating a dealership experience that's modern, transparent, and low pressure.

We shoot short-form vehicle walkarounds for the dealership — one, a Beetle Fender Edition, crossed 10,000 likes. They live on @pacificautohaus.

Right now: scaling inventory, tightening reconditioning, automating more of the marketing, and building out the second location.

Address, hours, license info, and current inventory live on the dealership site.

Software & AI

Everything here exists because I needed it on my own lot — then I built it to scale beyond it.

Lead follow-up system

Automated SMS follow-up for independent dealerships — handles the cadence after a lead comes in, surfaces who to call and when, and answers basic pricing questions. Built multi-tenant so other dealers can run it.

Operations assistant

A chat-based AI that runs dealership tasks from a phone — inventory questions, cost entry, parts lookup, and daily operational work.

Dealership website & tools

Rebuilt from scratch, statically generated, with custom tools:

  • Out-the-door price calculator — 21 Central Coast cities
  • Deal checker
  • Trade-in quote by text message
  • A page structured for AI models to read and cite

Marketing automation

An automated social posting pipeline on the Meta publishing API, automotive inventory ad feeds, and paid search campaigns.

The rule that matters. A language model should never be trusted with a number a customer might hold you to. Pricing is computed deterministically, the model only writes the words around it, and nothing sends until it has been checked against the real figures.

// the model never does arithmetic — it only writes the words
const quote = pricing.compute(vehicle, fees, taxRate) // deterministic
const draft  = model.write({ lead, quote })

if (!matchesQuote(draft, quote)) return escalate(lead) // never guess
sms.send(lead, draft)
